Indiana Department of Transportation Announces Bid Date for "Shovel Ready" Projects Tabbed for Stimulus Money
On Friday, February 27th, the Indiana Department of Transportation identified 29 infrastructure projects scattered around the State which have been designated to receive federal funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed by President Barack Obama on February 17th. These projects are valued at 43.6 million dollars.
The stimulus-funded projects were advertised February 27, 2009, for bids by contractors. INDOT has announced that bids will be opened on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, and will be awarded on a lowest-bid basis. (See http://www.in.gov/indot/2400.htm).
The 29 infrastructure projects identified by INDOT on Friday are the second list of State projects which will receive stimulus dollars. The first list included 26 projects valued at approximately 39 million dollars.
Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, INDOT has been designated to receive a total of 440 million dollars for construction projects. Under this federal legislation, local agencies in Indiana are to receive 198 million dollars in funding, and 20 million dollars will be spent in the State on "transportation enhancement projects," which include items such as sidewalks, trails and stoplights. According to Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, the 198 million dollar local agency distribution will be divided among Metropolitan Planning Organizations, Group III cities (populations between 5,000 and 50,000), Group IV cities (populations under 5,000), and local bridge projects.
